Booq BSQ-BLR Review

Booq BSQ-BLR Review by JayL

I just got this bag in and I could not be more pleased. I had previously been carrying my stuff in one of those Swiss laptop backpacks which are nice but it was much bigger than what I needed. I have to keep my laptop on me at all times for work so lugging around a big heavy bag was getting to be annoying. The items that I keep in this bag are as follows: laptop, laptop power adapter and cord, Ipad, ipad adapter and cord, ethernet cable, wireless mouse (kind of a big one cause I use a trackball), two thumb drives, pens, pencils, a leatherman, extra stack of business cards, backup apple connector cable and headphones, 1 poly-pocket folder which I keep with my laptop in the pocket to transport any documents that I would need to stay wrinkle/ fold free. I especially like how my ipad fits in the sleeve connected to the front of the laptop pocket. The Ipad in the apple case + a protective padded sleeve are a perfect snug fit. Not much else will fit in this backpack but you have room for a magazine or a small notebook in the main pocket if you need. The bag is super high quality and I think the build quality is great. It's light and small and will easily fit under the seat on an airplane so no cramming your stuff into the overhead compartment where you cant get to it. I also like how my stuff stands out against the read and white interior of the bag so its easy to find. This is my first Booq product and the bag is small and would not have worked for me while in school (dont think I could get one text book in there) but it fits my needs perfectly and based on the quality of this bag I wouldn't hesitate to buy more Booq products if I had a need.

This is a great bag for trips to and from the office. I have to admit, at first glance I thought it was way too small. Even after filling it with my 15" MacBook Pro, power cable, phone charger, earbuds, random pens and office supplies, two notebooks, a couple of folders, a baseball cap and a 1,000-page hardback, I was skeptical. But after a couple of days, its design and efficiency of storage really grew on me. It's replaced a Timbuk2 laptop messenger bag that I would routinely fill with extra gear (because I could) and then suffer with during the mile-long hike from parking lot to office. Now I only take what I need, when I need it - and with much more comfort.

I love the wide-mouth main zipper compartment; it ingeniously opens and gives access to all your gear. Multiple compartments inside keep everything organized and secure. Side zips are perfect for cables and accessories. Mesh pockets in the shoulder straps hold my smartphone (snugly), and similar pockets on the side of the bag are great for small items - though they're too small and tight for water bottles.

The minimalist design and interior color accents are the icing on the cake, and separate this from the pack of wannabe bag brands. The top handle is a nice touch for people like me who use this as their primary office bag. The laptop sleeve fits my MacBook perfectly, is well-padded and secure no matter how much junk I'm carrying.

On the downside, it is a commuter bag only. A chest strap would be nice for those days when you've got a full load. Zippers instead of velcro tabs would be better for the interior pockets, and sleeves for pens and pencils would be a good addition.

If you're a Booq fan and need something for weekend trips or overnighters (or a commuter/camera bag), check out the much larger Booq Boa Flow XL, Black-Red Backpack.

Booq BSQ-BLR Review by Michael Liberte (New York, NY)

I returned it on the same day I got it. Where do I start?

I was looking for something small - I hate big backpacks, and don't think I should be schlepping all my possessions around at all times. It seems that almost no one makes small laptop backpacks, and this seemed to be the only choice. I kind of expected it to be limited, but the reality was much worse.

I knew about those in advance:
- It doesn't stand upright - you have to hold it
- The middle zipper pocket is useless
- The side pockets are too small to be useful

What I didn't know, and couldn't live with:
- The curvy main zipper requires 3 hands to open and close. It resists your every attempt to slide it along those curves on the top - and since the backpack doesn't stand on its own, you have to use your knees to steady it while opening it.
- The shoulder straps are too short! Which means that their padded section ends somewhere next to my collar bones. This is partly because the pack is rigid and doesn't conform to your back, and partly because the straps are too short. I didn't think a small pack meant it was designed for small people... And this makes the strap phone holder unusable..
- Because of the design of the main compartment - when open slightly it tries to flap closed... which means you need to open it all the way to find anything. Not very convenient, especially in public. And when fully open - it hangs like a huge tongue displaying all the contents
- Side pockets are unusable
- The rigid construction and short straps just make it too uncomfortable, and frankly, quite ugly on your back. Instead of being snug against the shoulders - it tries to hang back and push its bottom into your kidneys

I ended up buying the Samsonite "Business Computer Backpack" which proved to be much better, and about the same size.
