I bought this board through another vendor, but felt the need to warn other customers before buying.
The first revision of the board has some issues. I've been building systems for > 20 years, and remember when Asus delivered solid mobos. This changed about seven years ago, and this generation of boards has not improved.
I brought the board home and setup it up on my bench. I ran memtest86+ overnight and had no problems. Excited, I began to build my system:
920 Core i7
6 GB DDR3 (6 x 1 GB Kingston).
1 8500GT PCI-Express Video Card.
2 x 1.5 TB Seagate SATA
1 x BD Optical Drive.
I then installed Vista Ultimate x64. After the initial install/configuration was complete, I then installed two working tuners from another system:
2 x WinTV-PVR-150 PCI tuner cards.
I waited on the installation of the tuner cards, because I have had troubles with windows loading incorrect drivers for these cards in the past. Post system installation is easier, because I have more control over what driver revisions to install.
That aside, once I rebooted my system with the new cards, I received an error for the bios after post, stating that there was an error with the CPU fan. The case was still open on my bench, and I can see the fan was fine. I rebooted the system, and all my CMOS settings were reset. I set the correct CMOS settings and continued. Now once the system booted, only one of the cards was able to tune correctly. I have direct drops to the tuner cards, from my cable distribution amp. The cable signal level is near perfect. Wondering if my tuner card died (or a problem with the PCI slot) I began the card swap routine. This required a reboot each time, each time with new and interesting post errors from the motherboard.
Each card tested fine. I put them both back into the original computer, which I was attempting to replace, and they both work fine in that system.
In the new (and now failing system) I then replaced the power supply, to remove any doubt that the rails were dipping below tolerance. I replaced it with my well-tested bench power supply, which is an Antec 1000W supply. The board still failed to post correctly, and did not fix my tuner card issue.
I ended up returning the board, only to read on other posts that I'm not alone with this problem. It appears there is a stability problem with this mobo, and I'm lucky it didn't take out any of my components.
Checking out the website for Asus, they are releasing a V2 of this board already. I'm steering clear of it, but to those more adventurous, you may wish to wait until it hits the streets before buying into this board.
